Voices

Voices was kind of an experiment. I’d just finished a breakthrough piece at NEC and was really primed to write something impressionistic. I ended up asking myself what it would sound like if I used the band to show everyone what my head sounds like all the time. Not that I have “voices in my head,” but yeah. It ended up being a super great chart, and Jack Cooper from U of Memphis (my first composition teacher and a man to whom I owe an ir-repayable debt) loved it. He asked whether Southern Comfort, the U of M Jazz Orchestra, could record it. It ended up being the title track for an album of theirs. Check out the alarm clock. That was fun.
